IMDb TV announces a rebrand to Amazon Freevee and its first Original movie

Whether you’re watching popular Original series like Alex Rider, prestige shows like Mad Men, or Oscar-winning movies like Judy, IMDb TV has become the premier destination for customers to find free, premium streaming content. Amazon announced the next era of the free streaming service: IMDb TV will rebrand to Amazon Freevee, beginning 27 April, in addition to growing its content lineup to include Original movies and expanding internationally into Germany later this year.

The ad-supported video on demand (AVOD) service has grown immensely in the last two years – tripling monthly active users – driven by rapid distribution across living room devices and mobile, an increasing slate of Originals, an always updating library of highly sought movies and TV shows, and over 60 FAST channels.

“Over the past two years, we have seen tremendous growth for our AVOD service and are committed to bringing our audiences premium, free-to-consumer content,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios. “We’re looking forward to building on this momentum with an increasing slate of inventive and broadly appealing Originals, and are excited to establish Freevee as the premier AVOD service with content audiences crave.”

“Customers are increasingly shifting to streaming ad-supported premium content, and we have developed Freevee to deliver them highly sought content with half the commercials of traditional TV,” said Ashraf Alkarmi, director of Freevee. “Our new name clearly communicates who we are: An easy-to-navigate streaming service, available to users for free, whenever and wherever they choose to watch some of the greatest Original and licensed content available.”

With the new name and logo also comes a surge of new Original content on the streaming service. Amazon Freevee will grow its Originals slate by 70% in 2022, including the spinoff of the longest-running Original series for Prime Video, Bosch: Legacy, premiering 6 May; a new home-design series, Hollywood Houselift with Jeff Lewis; Greg Garcia’s comedy series Sprung; the Australian crime drama Troppo; and High School, a scripted series adapted for television by Clea DuVall, produced by Plan B, and based on the New York Times best-selling memoir by Grammy-nominated, platinum recording artists Tegan and Sara Quin. Along with the new Original series, Freevee is also adding Original movies to its content lineup, beginning with the workplace rom-com Love Accidentally, starring Brenda Song and Aaron O’Connell.

Previously, Amazon’s free streaming service announced green-light orders for Primo, the coming-of-age comedy from Michael Schur and Shea Serrano, and On Call, the half-hour procedural drama from prolific TV producer Dick Wolf. Additionally, the service announced an AVOD first by licensing a deal with NBCU securing an exclusive network-window for films from Universal Filmed Entertainment Group’s 2020-21 theatrical slate, including titles such as Dolittle, The Invisible Man, Promising Young Woman, F9: The Fast Saga, as well as rights to a package of animated movies, including Sing 2.

These new shows and movies join popular Originals currently available on the service, like Pretty Hard Cases, Leverage: Redemption, UNINTERRUPTED’s Top Class: The Life and Times of the Sierra Canyon Trailblazers, Alex Rider, and Judy Justice. The service will announce additional new programming at its NewFronts presentation in May.
